KB: I can not wait to see you here in Madison WI at the Isthmus Green Day. I watch your show all the time on HGTV. Do you know what subject will you be highlighting and are you going to have time taking questions from the audience? I have recently moved home to take care of both my parents and I am trying to combine antique furniture with something that is more contemporary. I want to add pieces that can reflect all of our taste. Is there somekind of rule I should be following? Cordially, Sheri
Answer:
I look forward to meeting you this weekend in Madison. Part of my talk will be about how to design while being environmentally conscious. I always save time for questions at the end.
As for mixing old and new, remember that you need less modern pieces to convey a modern look. It’s best to throw in one modern piece for every 3-4 antique pieces

Kenneth, KBTV is a great and informative addition to your web-site. I’m curious about the hand painted wallpaper you have chosen for your entry way. The color is beautiful and it looks like it might have a crakled finish to it. Does it? Please tell us something about the process of how it is made. Thank you! Carol
Answer:
I’m not sure of the process the artist goes through to get the look (she likes to keep her secret formula, which I understand.) The finish looks like it has been painted with a green metallic paint over gold paper. The effect of the long strokes gives it the illusion of small bamboo stalks. The paper was installed yesterday so I plan to share it on KBTV soon.

Dear Kenneth, I also have a long entry in my home and was wondering are you going to use the same frames for each map or will they be different? And if I put pictures on my wall how do I know if using different frames that they will look good. Thank You in advance for your help. - Donna
Answer:
My maps are framed in the same frame style. Because I want them to read as one large piece, it is important to keep them in the same frame. If you plan to mix your pictures, stick with a common matte on all images. If you go with wood frames, stick to all wood frames, but keep them in the same wood tone (don’t hang a blonde wood frame next to an ebony wood frame). I would avoid using any metal frames as that can become to ‘office-y’.

I am enjoying watching the KBTV and your design tips (and seeing your new place). It would be great if you could do one discussing how to select paint colors, light or dark etc. Also, when selecting lighting for a bathroom, specifically sconces, should you match the finish with your other hardware (faucets, knobs), i.e. brushed nickel to brushed nickel, bronze to bronze? Thanks so much.
Answer:
Great suggestion. I’ll be sure to tape a segment that addresses these issues. Keep checking back!
