Question:
Kenneth, I was so inspired by all of your shows on HGTV and truly miss you!! Where can I find you? I am saving up my money and may be able to afford you next year I have 2 quick questions. If you could be so kind to answer, I would greatly appreciate it. 1) I have a very small foyer about 5 x 6 and there is a small window by the door, a coat closet and a bathroom and a very small wall where I have placed a mirror. Is there anything else I could do to this very small space to add appeal? 2) I have wood maple floors (natural) on 1st floor and 2nd floor den. Does the stairs connecting the 2 floors or the bedrooms on the 2nd floor have to have the same color wood? My style is transitional/contemporary. Please help.
Answer:
Thanks for your question. You can still find reDesign on Monday mornings on HGTV. I completed 52 episodes of this show and I’m currently doing another show for TLC which will be more great make-overs.
To answer your question: 1. When you work with small spaces, feel free to push the design limits. I love adding a textured wallcovering to a small room or even painting horizontal stripes in dark colors. Since it is a space you transition in and out of, make those little moments memorable. Every square inch of your home should have some WOW factor. 2. I do recommend using the same wood on your stairs. I also like the look of a seagrass runner on top of stairs too.

Question:
who is the manufacturer / designer of the contemporary/asian dining room table and chairs in slide 118?
Answer:
This dining room table and chairs get more attention than I ever imagined. These pieces are vintage Baker pieces which can be found on sites such as www.1stdibs.com

Question:
Trying to decide for our new master bath whether to use polished chrome or brushed (satin) nickle for the faucet, tub & shower fixtures. The room will be done in natural stone (beige limestone) with an ebony vanity. Going for the spa/zen’ish feel...but contemporty with clean lines with both the Durivat Stark undermount sinks and a Bain Ultra “Origami” tub. Appreciate your thoughts on chrome vs. nickle for this application. Thank you!!
Answer:
Of the 2 finishes you mentioned, I would recommend the polished chrome. However, if you want to add more warmth to your spa like bath, consider using oil-rubbed bronze - a hot finish in plumbing fixtures.

Question:
Kenneth, Your designs are so warm and welcoming! I absolutely love room 314 and wondered if the headboard was custom made or bought somewhere? If custom made, how was it done? What color is the chocolate wall? What kind of fabric is on the wall with the headboard? It is such a stunning room. Thank you! - Alison
Answer:
The headboard in this room is actually shoji screens. Because this bedroom was in a loft that overlooked the dining room, I added shoji screens to offer privacy to the bedroom area. They can actually open up if needed. You can get a similar look by framing in opaque plexi-glass. It’s like building a window (if you have a handy carpenter in your area). The brown is called Mink by Sherwin Williams. The fabric you see framing the shoji screens is a black linen and they function to close and block out the light so the room can become completely dark for those days when the client wants to sleep late.

Question:
My child’s bedroom has valted ceiling with no molding. What can I do to bring the attention to the ceiling height down. When you walk into the room, your eyes automatically go to the ceiling. Thank you ever so much.
Answer:
Add a chair rail moulding at approx 42” off the floor. I would then do something fun, like paint the area under the chair rail with chalk board paint. Rustoleum offers chalk board paint in new colors so you don’t have to stick the standard black. What a dream room - giving your kid permission to write on the walls and express their creativity!
